Menopause:
Non-hormonal treatment

Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) is a North American medicinal plant, which has been used to treat gynaecological symptoms for over 100 years.

For many women, the herbal active ingredients of black cohosh are an obvious choice for treating the troublesome but completely natural symptoms of menopause. The black cohosh root extract offers a gentle yet effective treatment option. There's a good reason why black cohosh is recognised worldwide as a proven natural medicine for the treatment of menopause symptoms.

Black cohosh root extract

The calming and regulating characteristics of black cohosh are due to the non-hormonal substances contained in its roots. An advanced pharmaceutical technique is used to extract these substances from the carefully dried rhizome (underground stem).

They are used in high-quality, effective medicines, such as Remifemin® plus St. John's wort or Remifemin®, in the form of the iCR special extract.

This extract contains no hormones or phytohormones (plant hormones) and has no unwanted effects on womb or breast tissue1,2.

Dietary supplements

Dietary supplements with soya or red clover are often mentioned as herbal alternatives for relieving menopause symptoms.

Unlike the black cohosh root extract contained in Remifemin® products, most soya or red clover products are available as dietary supplements but are not approved as medicines. This means that their effectiveness and how well they are tolerated do not have to be demonstrated in scientific studies.

Phytoestrogens during menopause

The use of dietary supplements with soya and red clover is particularly problematic because the assumed effect is based on phytoestrogens, i.e. plant hormones (black cohosh does not contain phytoestrogens). So far, it has not been possible to rule out that there may be unwanted effects that could stimulate growth in the womb or breast tissue.

The assumed benefits should therefore be carefully weighed against the possible risks before taking these supplements. This is the advice given by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR): "... BfR therefore advises against the long-term intake of these products given the unproven positive effects and the serious health consequences for menopausal women which cannot be ruled out." Effectiveness and tolerability confirmed by 13,000 women in more than 30 studies1

The isopropanolic special extract from the rhizome of black cohosh (iCR special extract for short) is the extract that has been most studied: More than 30 studies with over 13,000 female patients demonstrate the effectiveness and tolerability of the iCR special extract, which is contained only in Remifemin®. This makes it the most studied non-hormonal product for treating menopause symptoms.1

Menopause is a time of change: Hormone levels fluctuate significantly, often causing physical symptoms and a reduced sex drive. However, this doesn't mean that sensuality and your sex life have to suffer — in fact, they may even become more fulfilling.
