Why does Remifemin contain lactose? What is the actual lactose (milk) content?
The lactose monohydrate utilized in Remifemin is a pharmaceutical grade excipient. This ingredient serves many functional purposes in tablet dosage forms including: improving uniformity, tablet binding and compression, and aiding in disintegration.1,2
The exact amount of lactose in Remifemin is proprietary. However, because of the small dosage size, the lactose content is very low. In fact, when compared to common dairy products, one Remifemin tablet contains less lactose than a spoonful of plain low-fat yogurt or less than a sip of reduced fat milk.2-4
Last spring at the age of 40, I underwent a hysterectomy. I am currently taking 1.25 mg of Premarin® each day. I am doing well, but have real concerns regarding the production of this drug. I would like to investigate a more natural approach to hormone replacement. Do you know if there have been studies recommending black cohosh for women who have had hysterectomies?
Enzymatic Therapy® is happy to provide information about how our nutritional supplements and natural medicines can work to support certain organs, system, functions, and overall good health. The law prohibits us from diagnosing, treating, or making recommendations regarding the treatment of illness. In such cases, patients should consult a licensed health care professional who can work with them to determine appropriate medical treatment.
Premarin® a prescription drug, is a conjugated estrogen. Indications for use include symptoms associated with menopause.1
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the use of estrogen or estrogen/progesterone combinations after situations such as menopause or a hysterectomy. Estrogen used alone is associated with thickening of the lining of the uterus and an increased risk for endometrial cancer. Progesterone is used in combination with estrogen to minimize this risk by keeping the uterine lining from thickening.2
A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus while the ovaries remain.3 An ovariectomy is the removal of the ovaries while the uterus remains. As long as the ovaries remain, estrogen can still be produced.4 However, many people use the term "complete hysterectomy" as an all-inclusive term identifying the removal of the uterus and ovaries.
Black Cohosh and Woman's Choice® AM/PM Menopause Formula™ are natural herbal supplements for women in all stages of menopause, including surgically induced menopause following a complete hysterectomy. The key ingredient in both products is standardized black cohosh extract. Studies have shown that black cohosh, Cimicifuga racemosa, supports the health of women experiencing various stages of menopause.5-14 Black Cohosh and Woman's Choice® AM/PM Menopause Formula™ do not contain estrogen and are therefore hormone-free. Various constituents of black cohosh appear to bind to estrogen receptors without producing estrogen-like effects or changing hormone levels in the body.5,6 However, a black cohosh product should not be mistaken as hormone replacement, and the two are not interchangeable.
A unique feature of Woman's Choice® AM/PM Menopause Formula™ is that there are two separate formulas in one box. Different ingredients are included to address either daytime or nighttime symptoms. In addition to black cohosh in both the morning and evening tablets, this product contains ginseng and green tea in the morning dose and L-theanine, valerian and hops in the evening dose. These other ingredients are intended to address menopausal complaints of sleeplessness and lack of energy.
We recommend that your concerns with prescription hormone replacement therapy and your desire to explore herbal supplements be discussed with your licensed healthcare practitioner.

Is Remifemin® safe for women with a history of breast cancer?
Remifemin® is safe for use by women who have had breast cancer. The black cohosh extract used in Remifemin® has been studied closely and found to not have estrogenic effects (in other words, it does not act like the hormone estrogen). Additionally, a pilot study of Remifemin® use in women who had or were being treated for breast cancer found no significant adverse effects. To date, the results have demonstrated that black cohosh safely and effectively reduced hot flashes and night sweats.†
Remifemin® was really helping, but now my symptoms are starting to come back. Can I increase the dosage?
Taking 3 tablets twice daily has been shown to be as safe as taking one tablet twice daily, however, because each woman's health status is unique, we recommend that you consult with your doctor about whether or not you should take more than the recommended daily amount.
How soon will I notice results?
Use Remifemin® for at least 8 weeks before deciding whether or not it works for you.
Remember, Remifemin® is a natural supplement. It may take time to catch up to your body’s natural cycles. You may notice improvements relatively quickly, but for some, it can take up to 12 weeks to experience the full benefits.†
How do I know Remifemin® is safe?
For nearly 50 years, Remifemin® has been tested in clinical trials. No drug interactions have been observed, and adverse events have been limited to mild—and quickly passing—stomach upset. And remember, over 1.5 million women have taken Remifemin® since it was introduced, and more than a billion tablets have been sold around the world.
How is Remifemin® different from other black cohosh products?
The RemiSure™ black cohosh in Remifemin® is an isopropanolic extract. This yields a more complete spectrum of compounds than black cohosh produced by other extraction methods. It is also the most clinically studied form of black cohosh, with over 90 published trials and research papers.
Should I take Remifemin® with food or on an empty stomach?
It’s up to you—whether you take Remifemin® with or without food is matter of personal preference and convenience. It can be taken before, with, or between meals and won’t impact the effectiveness of the product.
