What is perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the time when your body begins to produce less estrogen. It's name - "peri"menopause means "around menopause".
At what age does perimenopause begin?
Most women begin experiencing perimenopause in their 40s, however if you are at risk for premature menopause, perimenopause could start as early as your 30s.
What are the signs that I'm in perimenopause?
As with any hormonal changes, every woman is going to have different signs or symptoms of perimenopause. Most commonly though you will begin to have much more irregular periods, an increase in the intensity of PMS, and occasional hot flashes, mood swings or night sweats.
Does experiencing perimenopause mean I'm menopausal?
Though you may experience some similar symptoms, you are not menopausal. During perimenopause, your body is still producing estrogen, just less of it - it's that change in hormones that causes the signs and symptoms including the irregularity in your menstrual cycle.
How long does perimenopause last?
Perimenopause, in general, lasts about 4 years. Some however, experience it much longer or shorter. Perimenopause ends when you've not had a period for 12 full months.
Can I get pregnant if I'm experiencing perimenopause?
Yes, though your body is producing less estrogen, you can still become pregnant during perimenopause. If you may be pregnant and are experiencing symptoms of perimenopause be sure to consult your doctor.
What is the difference between perimenopause and premature menopause?
Premature menopause is an early onset of menopause, classified as experiencing menopause at age 40 or earlier (known by 12 full months without a period). In perimenopause, you will begin experiencing irregular periods, but you will still be fertile. There are some known factors that could send you into premature menopause. If you are at risk, talk with your doctor.
If I'm having irregular symptoms, should I consider treatment?
