Jerri, that's a great question-which is actually not exactly "answerable" since we really don't know the exact cause of hot flashes. We do know that estrogen levels in the body fall in an irregular manner, and that triggers some activity in the hypothalamus in the brain, which is involved in temperature regulation. So we believe that many molecules can attach themselves to areas in the brain to help better regulate temperature-but beyond that, we really do not know exact mechanism.
