Melinda asks: I am on methadone for a 25 year addiction to painkillers. I am in the rehab program. I HAD migraines since age 5. I'm now 52. Once puberty hit the migraines increased to 3 to 5 a week. My head ALWAYS hurt. Then I discovered pain pills which quickly led to a nasty addiction...excuse me HOT FLASH!!! Gotta remove some clothing....NOW!!! Whew! Methadone has saved my life in stopping my migraines! I cannot explain the feeling of relief to have my brain pain free!! It's like being released from prison after being locked up for years for a crime I didn't commit. This only works for about 50% of people suffering from migraines. I was one of the lucky ones. Methadone is a powerful drug and highly addictive. It does make me sleepy IF I am lacking sleep and with menopause I am definitely sleep deprived...Excuse me again...cold now that hot flash is over...need my sweater...so annoying. Ok now,my doctor, a leading addiction specialist and caring man will not let me take black cohosh with methadone because of the sleepiness. I've been experiencing hot flashes for 5 years now along with the other typical menopause symptoms.


Marlene has not found anything to increase her ability to only sleep 3-4 hours a night. She is looking for sleep answers.


Lisa wants to know: When can I expect to feel normal again and maybe even get a decent night's sleep? Kristine wants to know if there are any NATURAL REMEDIES that she could try for all of the many symptoms she is experiencing? Julie asks: Is Remifemin a natural supplement or more like something you would get from the doctor. Someone told me that beings I have more around the belly that I don't need estrogen, that estrogen would make my belly get bigger. I don't want a bigger belly. I am having a hard enough time trying to get rid of what I got. Also, my mother had blood clots and can't take a hormone and i guess that is why I have a hard time trying things. Won't take a doctor script for hormones. Please help me, my moods are awful and hot flashes are worse.


Vicki asks: Is 43 too young to be going through perimenopause?


Deborah asks: Dr. Minkin—why do I always seem to have a hot flash, JUST when I am falling off to sleep? Of course, it wakes me right up and then it’s really hard to get to sleep afterwards.


Our online moderator, Michele Olson says that this question comes up often, so she’d to have a response to it. Sometimes she sees this statement come up as it relates to black cohosh: One note of caution: If you take a prescription medication for high blood pressure, check with your doctor because black cohosh may interact with it. Why is this suggested for some black cohosh products?


Rose-Marie asks: Is there a link between taking Remifemin and migraines please, I have just started taking these tablets, and have had a migraine since starting to take them, any info would be really great please.


Janice asks: Black cohosh did not work for me supplements don’t work for me either. Is there anything else?


Ellen asks: In early peri- I had heart palps and now through menopause I am having them again, what is up?

After your well after menopause, do the hot flashes ever go away?


I have been taking remifemin for 4 months now and it is working fine with only few hot flashes now and then. What is strange is that I have one every morning at almost the same time 4AM....any ideas?
