Before you were in menopause…you probably didn’t think about it too much. It seemed “way out there.” And, because as we ladies of a certain age were growing up no one really talked about menopause, we were even more in the dark. So as we grew older, we started to hear tidbits about this situation that didn’t sound like something we really wanted to deal with. Hot flashes was the word on the street, and we all hoped it would magically skip us.

Oh, if only.

But, then it did happen. And you found out that hot flashes weren’t “private summers” or warm and fuzzy at all. (I find them creepy, disturbing, and a nuisance.) But that wasn’t all there was to the story. There were night sweats and occasional sleeplessness and itching and a bunch of other things that you weren’t sure were related at all.  And then, if like me, you found out this can actually go on for ten years, you just didn’t know what you were going to do.

Oh, the horror.

At first, it’s just depressing. You shake your head and can’t believe that women for eons have gone through this. But then, you have to make a change in your attitude. I did and it made a difference. I had to get spunky and do some spunky thinking.

I’m not going to let menopause have the final word…or not live my life the way I want for 10 plus years! No way!

Then knowledge became power for me. It can for you too.  I had to look inside and develop some spunky thinking! You know…that thing inside where you dig down deep and go beyond your feelings and your circumstances and you resolve that you won’t be a victim of anything. Spunky!

So…fuzzy thinking?  Sticky notes. Being more aware and taking notes.

What is menopause anyway?  Research. Reading. Taking time to understand that menopause itself means you have not had a period for one full year. Anything before that is perimenopause.

Occasional Sleeplessness? Turn off stimulating TV and computers at least one hour before bedtime. Take a cool bath. Watch caffeine intake.

Hot Flashes? Tune down the temperature. Wear cool clothes. Don’t eat spicy foods.
